About the Japanese Diaspora Initiative

The Japanese Diaspora Initiative (JDI) at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives, supported by a generous anonymous gift, promotes archive-based research on the history of overseas Japanese and Nikkei communities during the Empire of Japan period.

To achieve this purpose, the initiative is engaged in collection development, curatorial work of archival documents and rare books, and scholarship. The JDI has been focusing on collecting primary source documents and making them available to researchers and the public.

The Hoji Shinbun Digital Collection is the flagship project and has become widely recognized as an important open-access resource on Nikkei history.
