About Hoji Shinbun Digital Collection
The Hoji Shinbun Digital Collection is currently the world’s largest online archive of open-access, full image Japanese American and other Nikkei community newspapers.
The geographical coverage of the collection has expanded from Hawaii and the Americas to Asia. With this expansion, the nature of newspapers has diversified from community-focused to political or military propaganda of the Empire of Japan. Although the primary language of these newspapers was Japanese, sections published in the local languages grew in Hawaii and the Americas over time.
Image content in this collection is accompanied by OCR-generated text that renders the text searchable, although this automated technology has not been applied to handwritten newspapers. The front-page headlines of a few major titles have been corrected manually, in addition to texts corrected by web community registered users.
Participating partner institutions that share an interest in preservation and wide access of important historical resources have made this large collection possible.
