Use of the Materials and Copyright
Access to the Hoji Shinbun Digital Collection is provided to users free of charge and granted solely for academic and research purposes (including studies of family genealogy and community history). For any proposed visual reproduction of the content or use of the material in publications, please contact the Hoover Institution Library & Archives for further instructions.
The Hoover Institution and Stanford University hold no copyright over any materials in the collection. Most of the newspapers in the Hoji Shimbun Digital Collection were published in the United States and ceased publication during World War II, coinciding with US policies that sent Japanese nationals and US-born Japanese to internment camps, if not earlier, with no known continuation of the newspapers’ activity. Other publications were able to continue during the war or resume their activity after the war, with a few still being published today. We understand that the US newspapers published before 1923 are in the public domain and that those published after 1922 and before 1964 are also in the public domain, if copyright notices are posted on the newspapers and if copyright was not renewed pursuant to the Copyright Act of 1909, which protects the copyright for a first term of twenty-eight years. The still-publishing Rafu Shimpo (Los Angeles) and Hawaii Hochi (Honolulu) have graciously consented to make their content available in the Hoji Shimbun Digital Archive, with access to those publications restricted to the Hoover Institution and Stanford University.
