Kinmon Nippō

[The Golden Gate News], (San Francisco, CA)

Kinmon Nippō Masthead

The Kinmon Nippō (The Golden Gate News) was a daily Japanese paper first published by Gen Nagai and several other Japanese men in San Francisco in 1893. Using a lithograph printing machine, the paper featured op-eds and a variety of news but was short-lived. The paper was apparently initially published to support the Japanese Christians, who were criticized for the portrait of the Meiji emperor by Nihonjin Aikoku Dōmei. Besides being a newspaper publisher, Nagai, along with his wife, then successfully sold insurance to the Nikkei community in San Francisco.
