Founded in 1903, the Rafu Shinpō was the first Japanese-language newspaper published for the Japanese community in Southern California, who had been relying on the San Francisco–based Nichibei Shinbun and Shin Sekai. It was begun by a group of Japanese college students studying in the United States, and has become the longest-surviving Japanese-American bilingual daily paper published in California. The Rafu Shinpō introduced an English section in the Sunday edition in 1926; it continues to publish until today, with a gap during World War Two.

『羅府新報』は米国に留学中の複数の日本人学生により1903年に創刊され、ロサンゼルスを中心としたカリフォルニア南部での邦字新聞の第1号となった。同紙発行以前は、ロサンゼルス在住の日本人はサンフランシスコから届けられる『日米新聞』や『新世界』を購読していた。同紙はカリフォルニア州で現在も発行されている唯一の日米バイリンガル日刊新聞で、長い歴史を誇る。1926年には日曜版に英字欄が登場、第二次世界大戦中は一時発行の中止が余儀なくされたが、その後再開、現在も発行中である。
