Shōnan Shinbun

(Singapore)

Shōnan Shinbun Masthead

Shōnan Shinbun was first published by Dōmei Tsūshinsha Shōnan (Singapore) bureau on December 8, 1942, after Japanese troops occupied the territory. The Japanese national news agency also published an English paper, the Syonan Times (later renamed to the Shonan Shimbun). Dōmei and thirteen Japanese newspaper companies approved by the military established Shōnan Shinbunkai in January 1943. This organization managed the afore-mentioned two newspapers in addition to sixteen other Chinese, Malay, English, and Japanese newspapers published in Malay, Sumatra, and northern Borneo. Later in October 1944, the Japanese army directly put Dōmei in charge of the publication management in these occupied territories. The paper continued to publish at least until September 2, 1945, disseminating post-war news.
