Sōkō no Shiori was initially published as an appendix, the San Furanshisuko Annai (Guide for San Francisco), in the Japan Herarudo (Japan Herald). Having become popular in the Nikkei community, in 1898 it was published separately by Isaburō Okada under the title Sōkō no Shiori, serving as a handbook for newly arrived Japanese in San Francisco. Featuring photographs printed in photogravure and written in a plain style, the monthly magazine gained an even wider readership.

『桑港の栞』は元々『志やぱんへらるど』の付録の「桑港案内」として発行されていた。その後、日系社会で人気となり、1898年に『桑港の栞』と改名、岡田依三郎により毎月発行された。サンフランシスコに到着したばかりの日本人向けハンドブックの役割を果たすと同時に、銅板写真を挿入、平易な文章を使い、幅広い読者層を得た。
