Burajiru Jihō

[Notícias do Brazil], (São Paulo, Brazil)

Burajiru Jihō Masthead

The Burajiru Jihō was an organ paper of Burajiru Imin Kumiai (Brazil Emigration Association), first published by Seisaku Kuroishi in São Paulo, Brazil in 1917. Along with a typeset and a printer, Kuroishi brought to Brazil his experience as a newspaper reporter for the Rokkī Jihō (the Rocky Mountain Times) in Salt Lake City, Utah. Shungorō Wako, who left the Nippaku Shinbun, joined the Burajiru Jihō as editor in chief. Later by 1922, the Burajiru Jihō became independently operated by Kuroishi after Burajiru Imin Kumiai’s business was transferred to Kaigai Kōgyō Kabushiki Kaisha. Its authoritative tone contrasted with a more liberal rival paper, the Nippaku Shinbun. Backed by better financial support, the Burajiru Jihō enjoyed the largest circulation among the Japanese newspapers published in Brazil. A Portuguese section was added in 1939 after all the foreign-language publications were ordered to accompany Portuguese translations. Later the Burajiru Jihō was suspended after foreign-language newspapers were banned in Brazil in 1941. The newspaper was revived in 1946 but eventually closed down in 1952 amid an escalated feud in the Japanese Brazilian community over disbelief of Japanese defeat in WWII.
