Nichibei Shinbun Masthead

The Nichibei Shinbun (the Japanese American News in English) was founded in 1899 after the merger of the Hokubei Nippō (North American Daily) and the Sōkō Nihon Shinbun (San Francisco Japan News). It became one of the two major San Francisco–based daily newspapers, along with the Shin Sekai. Under the leadership of Kyūtaro Abiko, the paper advocated the permanent settlement of Japanese in the United States.
